KCA Overview

Kensington Community Association (KCA) believes we all have a right to live in a safe, healthy, well-managed and prosperous neighbourhood and we have a responsibility to help create and maintain this environment.
We work in an inclusive, non-partisan and secular manner to advance and safeguard the interests of residents, ratepayers and other members of the community of Kensington and adjacent suburbs. We aim to:

  • Protect the environment and infrastructure of the area.
  • Stimulate interest in, discussion of and action on any matter of community interest.
  • Encourage observance of all laws, by-laws and regulations by the community.
  • Lobby for the efficient and effective administration of the suburb by government.

Partnership is central to our approach. We engage and cooperate with other civil society organisations and local structures such as community policing forums. We also strive to work with government, wherever possible, to advance the interests of Kensington. At the same time, we stand for active citizenry and government accountability.

KCA has its roots in the Kensington Residents and Ratepayers Association (KRRA) which served the community of Kensington for many years. The transition from the KRRA to the KCA reflects our members’ appreciation that we need to broaden our vision and strengthen our base to keep pace with the changes Kensington is experiencing, the challenges residents’ face, and their dreams for the future.

KCA is a membership organisation and our strength depends critically on the participation of residents in the life of the association. People who live, study or work in Kensington and adjoining suburbs and organisations with property in the area are eligible to join KCA. We also welcome the participation of residents who are not signed-up members in our activities.

KCA is coordinated by an executive committee, consisting of a maximum of 14 members. The office bearers and most committee members are chosen every two years at an annual general meeting. Cooption of additional members allows for renewal between executive elections.

The association’s work is driven by several operational committees responsible for various areas of focus.
